When his book Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World was published by Thomas Nelson in May 2012, it hit three major bestseller lists (New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today) within the first week after publication.
While there were many factors contributing to the success of this book, including the publisher’s own efforts, Michael Hyatt used a very good strategy which many authors have since replicated, and you can too. The strategy made use of his own strong author platform at the time.
Michael sent out a call for help.
“I need your help. Part of building your PLATFORM is recognizing you need others to help you along the way. That’s true for you. It’s true for me.”
He invited his readers to join a special “Platform Launch Team” of 100 fans and help to get the word out about the book. In return he offered a free electronic review copy of the book in advance of the publication date, access to him and the other team members in a Private Facebook Group, a special THANK YOU with link to their blog or website, and a 25% off discount on his 21-session ‘Get Published’ audio program.
These people agreed to write a brief book review, as well as spreading the word about the book in any other ways during a specified week. The launch team also shared ideas and brainstormed additional ways to promote the book.
764 people applied. 100 were chosen for the launch team. Other potential customers and readers were given opportunity to buy a copy on the launch week and get $375 worth of bonuses.
